Hectic

Sorry for the lack of posting going on but it's a busy time right now between my brother's wedding (this Friday!) and with the absolute craziness of work. These past couple of weeks have just flown by and I'm still trying to catch my breath. I hope to return very soon with some more posts and more amusing stories. Until then, however, I just hope that I can survive!

Trip To The Hollywood Bowl

This past Saturday Jessica and I took a day trip to L.A. to see The Decemberists, Band of Horses, and Andrew Bird perform at the Hollywood Bowl. We were familiar with all three artists when we purchased the tickets and we were really excited about the show. So we packed a picnic meal, a bottle of wine, and a pair of binoculars before heading down south. We left earlier than we needed to for the concert because of two reasons. The first reason was that we didn’t want to be rushed to the arena and wanted to leave ourselves plenty of time for travel. This was especially important since we parked our car in Pasadena where a shuttle took us to the Hollywood Bowl for a minimal fee.

The second reason we left earlier than necessary, was that we wanted to stop by Burbank to see one of the eleven 7-11 stores that had been converted into the Kwik-E-Mart from The Simpson’s. As part of a month-long promotion for the upcoming Simpson’s movie, the creators of the show have done their best to transform several convenience stores to match the Simpson realm. At the store, they had life-size cutouts of various characters from the show as well as products created specifically from the show. They were selling Buzz cola, pink frosting donuts with sprinkles, and squishees. Sadly, they are not selling any Duff beer, nor did they have any Krusty-o’s; however, a sign said that these products can be found in any 7-11 store around the country. We waited about 45 minutes in line or so just to get into the store, but it was well worth the visit. Jessica had her camera with her and took lots of pictures, so maybe I’ll be able to link to them later.

The concert itself was awesome and it was my first time ever at the Hollywood Bowl. It’s quite a venue that I recommend anyone to experience at least once. Our seats were in the nose-bleed section, but we didn’t care since we were prepared. Part way through the first act (Band of Horses) some random girl came up to us and offered us free tickets for seats two whole sections closer to the stage. We didn’t hesitate in grabbing the tickets and moved to our closer seats just in time for the next two acts. All of the groups sounded great and performed just as well live as in their recordings, but hands down the best performance of the evening was the headliner act of The Decemberists. They performed with the L.A. Philharmonic orchestra for most of their set, which was just amazing. Their music really lends itself well to the orchestral accompaniment so it sounded fantastic. I found a video online from the concert to capture a snapshot of how it sounded.

It was quite a day and it was well worth all the travel. Jessica and I both agreed to look into buying more CDs from each of the groups, and I have a feeling that some artists of the month later in the year might come from this concert series.

How to Speed up Time

Well, 4th of July has come and gone and with it the various parties, the food, the drinks and the company. We said good-bye to Rachel as she disembarks on her European adventures, and I got to watch fireworks with Jessica and the SoCal bunch of my extended family. The holiday itself has completely thrown off my weekly scheduling, as most holiday usually do; however, It’s particularly confusing when that holiday lands in the middle of the week. When you get the day off of work for a holiday on a Wednesday, it feels like two weeks are really condensed into one. For me I have had two Sundays this week, two Mondays and likewise, two Fridays around my work schedule. Today has felt strange because habit has told me that it should be a Monday, when actually it’s Thursday. Now everything that happened from Sunday through Tuesday feels like last week and this “new” week started last night and ends tomorrow. Suddenly my mind is off and I can’t remember when things are any more. What day is it again?

In a summer where time is flying by, I don’t need to lose any more.

What's Listening - The Format

Every month I showcase a different artist and album that I’m currently listening to. More than just browsing these artists, I purchase an album from each group in order to give them a fair representation and to increase their availability to others.

June’s artist of the month comes by contribution from Becca, who owed me a CD for a previous purchase. She bought me “Interventions and Lullabies” from The Format, another artist from the Veronica Mars Soundtrack. My usual approach to any new band is to listen to their sound and determine what other groups they might sound like. The Format gives us a combination of Jimmy Eat World, The Fray (which Jessica repeatedly gets confused with The Format anyway), and something else. That something else is what makes them unique among other similar bands, and what I appreciate in this album is a willingness to try different styles of music.

Favorite songs from the album include “Wait, Wait, Wait”, “Tune Out”, “Career Day”, and of course the one that inspired the purchase, “On Your Porch”, which takes on a completely different styling from the rest of the CD. For more information and for a chance to get some free songs (if you act relatively soon) check out their webpage at http://www.theformat.com/

I’m off for Independence Day tomorrow, but will be back later this week for more posts!
